The budget should serve as the business plan for implementing program goals and objectives throughout the year. Think back to a time when you were new to a place or business. What did you do first? Who showed you around and answered your questions? How did they make you feel about your new surroundings? Whether you have a new staff member or family in the center, first impressions and a sense of belonging will set the tone for the rest of their stay in your program. This training will focus on many characteristics of a successful orientation process.

Most new employees receive a copy of a job description and performance evaluation. How do you use these tools? The purpose of evaluating staff must be clear and practiced regularly. Used correctly, observations and evaluations can promote open communication and clarify expectations between the staff and the director. This training will explore methods a director can use with their staff to grow professionally.

As a director, you have multiple responsibilities and provide care for many people. Subsequently, you encounter many stressors throughout the day, such as parent demands, challenging behavior, staff conflicts, licensing compliance issues, etc. Your emotional health needs to be your first priority. If your symptoms of stress are not recognized and managed, your health and effectiveness as a leader will suffer.  This training will address the stressors you may encounter and suggest strategies or techniques for you to practice reducing and “taking control” of your stress.

Directors can promote STEAM experiences throughout the curriculum by encouraging teachers to incorporate problem-solving and STEAM vocabulary in all types of activities. When the teachers (adults) converse with children of any age and ask questions (inquiry), this helps them learn about their world. Inquiry builds critical thinking skills and supports problem solving across the domains of learning and development. This training will provide STEAM vocabulary and strategies for engaging children in conversations and supporting the curiosity of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

As directors supervise the daily activities provided in their childcare program, what fundamentals should they observe throughout the center? Literacy routines are essential to early childhood development. Talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing nurture and develop core early literacy skills. This training will explore practices that support a language-rich environment for children to learn and develop.

Dr. Becky Baily teaches, “Discipline isn’t something you do to children, it’s something you develop within them.” It is important for Directors and their staff to understand that disciplining children and teaching children are the same act. We will explore how to change our mindset of discipline, so we can model and teach children how to behave.

Supervision is a means to helping your staff serve the children well and develop their professional skills. “Adults like children, grow through stages of development. Each stage predicts the type of supervision you use.” Holly Elissa Bruno This training will identify the stages of development and methods to assess the needs of each staff member for directors to supervise effectively.

According to Erik Erikson, “a child’s early learning is most successful when supported by high-quality relationships between families and teachers.” This training will focus on strategies a Director may employ to encourage positive connections between the staff and the families of the children in their care.
